Dear Everly

Dear Everly,

I thought that Fall, Winter and Spring were so enjoyable to experience with you for the first time, however I must say that so far, Summer is the best.  Your eyes sparkle when sunshine creeps through our morning windows and into your crib, and that familiar birdsong that manages to drawl its way through the hundred-year-old brick of our home is always sure to make you smile in your sleep.  It is such a magical season.

Just last year around this time, your father and I were so excited to greet the first lightning bugs of the season, secretly knowing that their arrival meant meeting you was right around the corner.  And now here we are together, sitting on our back deck and watching these same glowing creatures dance around our backyard at dusk; your soft voice telling me stories about them in your secret baby language.

Soon these little legs of yours will walk about, and these lazy  Summer nights will transform into evenings of exploration and playtime in the backyard, around the neighborhood, and anywhere your bike can pedal to.  You’ll return home with muddy fingers and stars in your eyes, with plenty of stories of your discoveries.  These days may seem far off but i know they are truly right around the corner.  For now though, I’m holding you tight on my lap, soaking in every precious moment of your infancy, and trying my best to freeze these memories in my heart forever.

Letter to my Father

10.28.80 My Mom, Dad, and me.

I’m not sure if you realize this or not, but I would not be where I am today had I not had you in my life.  Ever since I was a little one myself, you’ve always been my biggest supporter, my toughest critic, and the person who truly made me believe that I could do anything I wanted to as long as I put my heart and soul into it.

I remember when I was very young and in the car driving with you to pick up a newspaper after church.  I sat across from you in our grey station wagon as you unrolled the Sunday paper and placed the front page on my lap.

“Read that page to me,” you said, taking a sip of your black coffee.  Mind you, I was at a reading age, but nowhere near the level capable of reading any type of newspaper.  You didn’t care.  I had no idea what the words meant that I was sounding out, no idea if the phrases I was saying made any type of sense or not, and struggled to get through it.  “Keep going,” you told me.  And I did.

It sounds silly but this little Sunday activity laid the foundation for everything else I would ever attempt in my personal and professional life.  Going back to college, writing my senior thesis, making a career change, speaking my mind in a boardroom, becoming a parent myself.  So many things scared the crap out of me and seemed so unattainable, yet I always had that drive to keep pushing forward, no matter what I was up against.

So today, Dad, and every day, Thank You, from the bottom of my heart for playing such a key role in my upbringing.  You are one heck of a father and an even better Grandpa to Everly.  Happy Father’s Day!

Thank you, Honey

For making me laugh, for lifting me up when I am weak, for having such an adventurous spirit, for always being ready to tackle anything that comes our way – good or bad.  You are an amazing father to our little Everly.

Happy Father’s Day,

A Lovely June Weekend

As soon as the warmer weather gets here, it’s always “Go, go, go” for Marty and I, and that was definitely the case this weekend.  As soon as we walked in our doors from work on Friday evening, we had changed into our weekend clothes and were heading out – pups, baby, diaper bag, beer & all – to have dinner with a couple of our dearest friends.

The food was delicious – Tilapia, green beans, cauliflower mash – and we even got to enjoy some Ted Drewes for dessert.  Everly enjoyed her first bites of the famous St. Louis custard, and it definitely got her seal of approval.

Saturday was busy-busy as usual.  After breakfast & a morning bath for Ev, I headed out for a much needed haircut/color while Marty got to clean out the gutters (fun, fun, fun!) Evy got spoiled at Grandpa’s, then we got to ring in a very special birthday for another of our best friends that night.

Sunday was more on the relaxing side.  I got to sleep in a bit (7:30 is sleeping in for this Mama), then have morning coffee & playtime with Everly before heading out to a pool party!  I made this amazing Cabbage Apple Slaw with Glazed pecans and got to enjoy some pool time with the husband and good friend.

Yes, it was a lovely weekend indeed.  It’s only June, but I know these summer weekends won’t last forever, so I’ll be braving the rest of this week with a smile, and secretly counting down the days until Friday.  It just can’t come soon enough.  Hope you had a lovely weekend too!

Trying out her new bikini & ready for a dip in the tub

My goodness.  We are in the double digits now.  Seriously, where has the time gone?  I’ve merely blinked and my little one is transforming into a bubbly, charming girl before my very eyes.  Flutters of her personality become more and more evident as days go by, and stir up images in my imagination of what Everly will be like at 5, 10, 20 years old.  We are so very proud of her and her life has barely begun.  This age is so much fun and we couldn’t be happier.  We are soaking in every second having a 10-month old.  Here’s a peek at her recent updates:

What’s New:
Everly is becoming more and more independent; she’s pulling up on everything (end tables, the bathtub, you name it) and is oh-so-curious with just about everything she encounters – light switches, lamps, mirrors, wall hangings, the inside of the refrigerator door.)

Recent Discoveries:
Straws! (She loves to share drinks with her Mama – don’t worry though -just water & smoothies) and chasing her pups around.

Getting around:
While she hasn’t started taking steps yet, Evy loves to hold our hands and walk about our home, seeing things from a higher perspective (and perhaps scheming what she should get into next).

Her Favorite Things:
Doors! (She loves to swing them back and forth, and flick the doorstops – she loves the sounds they make), running water (she will speed-crawl to the bathroom at the first sound of her evening bath running, and loves to wash her hands in the faucet),  and grilled cheese sandwiches (we couldn’t agree with her more on this one – they rock!)

Our Favorite Things:
Watching her listen to a song or tune and start bopping up and down – she LOVES to dance!  Mornings are one of our favorite times with Everly.  She wakes up so incredibly happy and it is just the best possible start to each and every day.  She truly is our sunshine!

Summertime Fun

Hi there,  my apologies for being such a bad blogger lately; the summer bug has definitely bitten us and we’ve been busy bees enjoying much of the warmer weather with friends and family.  Since it’s been a while, I thought I’d give you all a little update on what’s new in the Buehler world.

We Celebrated A Special Anniversary
on 5.26, Marty and I clinked glasses to ring in 5 blissful years of marriage.  It’s so hard to believe that 5 years ago, we were just babies ourselves walking down the aisle with everything ahead of us. Last year on our 4-year anniversary, I couldn’t even imagine how much better things could get.  And here we are now, with our beautiful daughter who is a living testament to our union and the greatest gift we could have ever given one another.  We are truly living our dream as parents and could not be more excited for many more precious years to come, future children, and endless adventures.

And Then We Kicked off Summer with Memorial Day Weekend at the Lake
We packed up our car with pups, Everly, swimsuits and our summer gear and headed down to the lake to enjoy the day and get some sun.  Everly enjoyed breaking in yet another bathing suit, eating as much watermelon as her little heart desired, and being surrounded by all the sights and sounds the great outdoors has to offer.  There were boat rides, BBQ, lots of laughter, sunshine, and even a dip in the water.

And Now We’re Looking Forward to a Fully Packed Summertime Agenda
Summer is my favorite time of year, and this year we’ve got a lot to look forward to.  My brain is buzzing with excitement knowing that we have an upcoming trip to the beach with my family, followed by Everly’s first birthday party to plan – which I really need to get cracking on!  The wheels are already turning and I’ve got a few ideas up my sleeve for making her birthday special and I hope to share them with you soon.  Until then, it’s Sunday and I’ve got one happy lady who needs some attention from her Mama.  Take care!
